Practical sequence

The first 30 days in Portugal

This is a practical guide, not a mandatory legal calendar.

01

Get your NIF

The tax identification number is used for many everyday matters such as contracts and banking.

  • The official NIF request is free.
  • Foreign residents and non-residents can request it.
  • Documents vary according to tax residence and representation rules.

02

Request your NISS

The Social Security identification number is used for contributions and social-security matters.

  • Foreign nationals can request it online.
  • The official request is free.
  • Legal representatives and employers may apply in eligible situations.

03

NHS/SNS user number

For foreign nationals, the national health user number can be assigned when first accessing a public health unit.

  • It can be assigned at a public health centre or hospital.
  • Assignment of the number is free.
  • Having the number does not automatically mean every cost is covered.

Confirm the correct residence route

Your procedure depends on your visa, legal basis, nationality, work, study or family situation.

  • Use a digital portal when one exists for your procedure.
  • AIMA currently points to its Contact Form for many in-person appointment requests.
  • Some appointments are generated automatically.

Safety

Avoid fake “official fees” and guaranteed appointments.

Urgency makes scams more effective. Protect your access codes and verify who is asking for money or documents.

Never share passwords or access codes

Do not give unknown people access to Finanças, Social Security Direct, AIMA or Digital Mobile Key credentials.

Check whether the public service is free

The official NIF and NISS requests are free. A private professional may charge for their own work, but that is not a government fee.

Be cautious with “guaranteed appointments”

No legitimate intermediary can guarantee a favourable decision merely because money was paid.
