PRACTICAL LIFE

Moving home does not automatically update every organisation.

The Tax Authority, Social Security, AIMA, banks, healthcare and utility providers may keep separate records. When leaving Portugal permanently, review tax residence and contracts too.

What to know first

01

Tax Authority

For people without a Portuguese Citizen Card, the Tax Authority states 60 days where the change alters resident/non-resident tax status and 15 days for other address changes.

02

Social Security

Anyone registered with Social Security can change address and other data, including phone, e-mail and IBAN, through the official service.

03

AIMA

AIMA provides Contact Form routes for data changes; 2026 instructions include communicating/correcting an address depending on the process or title.

04

If you are leaving Portugal

Review tax residence, banking, energy, water, telecoms, school, healthcare and any impact of absences on your residence title. There is no single button that cancels everything.

Important: Do not “cancel the NIF” when leaving: it remains the person's tax identifier. What may need changing is fiscal address/status, contracts and records held by other organisations.
