What you need to know

Start with the essentials

01

Who can attend

AIMA describes PLA courses for people aged 16 or over whose mother tongue is not Portuguese and/or who do not have the relevant Portuguese-language skills.

02

Documentation

Document eligibility depends on the residence/status evidence presented. AIMA lists residence titles and other documents covered by the programme rules.

03

Where to look

AIMA provides course and provider information; IEFP, schools and training bodies may have offers in different regions.

04

More than language

Portuguese helps with contracts, healthcare, school and public services; CLAIM can also refer migrants to local integration resources.

Important: Do not confuse a Portuguese-course certificate with automatic proof of any specific legal requirement. Where language is required for a procedure, check which evidence that procedure accepts.
