Residence permit problems: use the correct channel.

Renewing a permit, replacing a lost card and correcting data are different procedures. This guide points you to the correct starting route.

Renewal

If your permit is expiring or has expired.

AIMA currently indicates the Renewal Portal for residence permits expired or expiring from 1 July 2025 within the date window made available in the portal, currently through 31 October 2026.

Permits from 1 July 2025

Start with the Renewal Portal. For covered cases, submission, payment and documents are handled digitally.

Permits expired by 30 June 2025

Do not assume that the same Renewals Portal route applies. AIMA's current published availability for that portal starts with permits expired or expiring from 1 July 2025; for earlier permits, confirm the applicable route through AIMA's official channels before starting.

See current portal availability ↗
Confirm which route applies to your permit before acting. Renewal channels depend on the permit type and expiry date. Once a request is started, keep the receipt and monitor notifications in the portal used.
Lost · stolen · destroyed

Request a replacement through AIMA's Contact Form.

AIMA provides a Contact Form option for a second copy of a residence card/permit.

Base documents

  • Copy of passport.
  • Copy of the residence card/permit when available.

If lost or stolen

  • Police report made to the competent authority.
  • Keep a copy of the report and the submitted request.
Permit details

Changing data is a separate request.

The Contact Form also supports requests to change data linked to the permit. AIMA requires evidence of the reason for the change where applicable. If your renewal is already being handled in the Renewal Portal, use the portal/contact options specifically indicated by AIMA.

Address, e-mail, passport or other details may use different channels depending on the procedure. Check whether your case is in the Renewal Portal, AIMA Services or a first-grant process before submitting.
After applying

Keep receipts, proof and notifications.

After starting a renewal, keep the proof issued by the channel used, payment receipts and all notifications. The validity and legal effects of that proof should be checked for the specific procedure.

Do not automatically treat renewal proof as a travel document. Before leaving Portugal, check the border and entry rules that apply to your documents and destination.
Portal

If the Renewal Portal does not work.

Do not create contradictory requests in several channels without a reason. First confirm that your permit category and date are covered. For submission problems, use AIMA's Contact Form and select the option for the Renewal Portal.
