DIREITOS

Being a migrant does not make discrimination acceptable.

Portugal has different mechanisms for racial discrimination, employment issues, crimes and legal aid. The correct channel depends on what happened.

What you need to know

Start with the essentials

01

Racial discrimination

CICDR is an independent administrative body operating alongside Parliament and deals with prevention/prohibition of discrimination based on racial/ethnic origin, colour, nationality, language, ancestry and territory of origin.

02

At work

Employment matters, including discrimination and working conditions, can be reported to ACT; other forms of employment discrimination may involve specialised bodies.

03

If the facts may be a crime

A criminal complaint can be filed with the competent authorities. The Justice portal explains the process and channels.

04

Legal aid

Legal protection can include appointment of a lawyer and waiver/payment of costs for eligible people who cannot afford them. Applications can be made via Social Security Direct or in person, depending on the case.

Important: Keep messages, advertisements, e-mails, photographs, receipts, witness names and dates when relevant. Do not publicly expose third parties' personal data merely to “prove” the case.
