After five years there may be rights beyond ordinary renewal.

Long-Term Resident Status (ERLD) is a specific regime. EU citizens have separate permanent-residence documents under Law 37/2006.

Who this page is for

I have lived legally in Portugal for several years

  • Third-country nationals with legal and uninterrupted residence during the immediately preceding five years, when the remaining conditions are met.
  • EU Blue Card holders in covered situations.
  • EU citizens/family members seeking permanent residence should use the EU regime rather than ERLD.
Important

Do not mix legal routes

Having five years of residence cards does not automatically produce ERLD status. Absences, continuity and other requirements matter.
Your route, step by step

What to check first

01

Do not confuse it with renewal

ERLD is a status, not simply another temporary-permit renewal.

02

Five years is only one condition

AIMA also identifies tax/contribution compliance, language evidence and other conditions.

03

The status is permanent in character

AIMA indicates issuance of an EU long-term resident title valid for at least five years and renewable.

04

If you are an EU citizen

Use the EU permanent-residence route, which follows separate rules.
