PRACTICAL LIFE

Family life also creates civil-registration events.

Birth, marriage and other family events may require civil registration. Nationality and the country where the event occurred affect the procedure.

What to know first

01

Birth in Portugal

Every child born in Portugal must be registered, even where the parents are foreign. If not completed at the maternity hospital, gov.pt states a period of up to 20 days after birth.

02

Foreign parents

Having foreign parents does not remove the registration requirement. Portuguese nationality for the child is a separate question.

03

Marriage in Portugal

The process can be started at a civil registry office. For foreign spouses, Justice accepts a passport/equivalent document or residence permit as identification, plus other evidence depending on the case.

04

Marriage celebrated abroad

Registration/transcription in Portugal is particularly relevant where a Portuguese citizen is a spouse. Not every foreign marriage uses the same formality.

Important: Civil registration, nationality and immigration are different subjects. Registering a birth or marriage does not automatically create a residence permit or Portuguese nationality.
